Background and Unlit/Lit Pictures
Either XenoDream images, and/or other graphic images from outside of the program, may be used for several purposes, and with varied results. There are currently three file formats available for importing into XenoDream for these purposes:
- BMP -- Microsoft Windows Bitmap
- JPG, JPEG -- Joint Photographic Experts Group
- PSD -- Adobe Photoshop
XenoDream is a two layer system. The back layer is either a Background Picture or a specifically set color. The front layer is either an Unlit picture or a Lit picture (except that you can hide them both to see the background picture). The background mask button simply lets the background show around the object. If it seems to do nothing, it's either because the background color is black (same as the unlit picture's "background") or the object fills the entire picture and there is no background area to show through.

Importing Images to Apply Lighting Effects on
- Click on the "Show Picture" button from the Main form.
- From the the Picture form, on the left side of the menu under FILE, choose either of these options:
- Open Background picture...
- Open Unlit picture...
- Use the Open File dialog box to choose the graphic of your choice. Files with the BMP extension may be previewed as thumbnails and as full size images.
- Now click the Depth button found along the right side of the Picture form's menu. This opens both the Lighting form and the Depth form.
 - Click the button for Source, to make it the same picture value as what was opened (Back or Unlit).
- At this point, any of the other parameter fields on the Depth form may also be adjusted.
- Click the Preview button to get some idea of what it will look like with those settings.
- Eventually click the Do It! button to accept the values and the image to be used for lighting effects.
- Now apply any of the Lighting Presets, or create your own effects.
